If there’s one thing a parent loves, it’s finding that spot where you can not only enjoy an amazing meal for a great price, but you can also let your children roam freely without wreaking havoc in the restaurant. For my family, this is Café Kleinhaus in Unterbilk. They tick all my boxes.

✅  Beautiful interior

✅  High-quality food

✅  Great prices

✅  Child friendly

✅  AND… they’re working on building a beautiful garden terrace and children’s playhouse in their backyard

Before I go on, I will disclose that this restaurant feature is not sponsored, nor do I have any affiliation with the staff. Café Kleinhaus is a hidden gem that deserves to be shared with everyone, and hopefully, I can help them out a bit during these tough COVID-19 days.

Café Kleinhaus

Café Kleinhaus is a Turkish café and pizzeria that is constantly creating new dishes based on customer reviews and feedback. Their dishes are all made with fresh and authentic ingredients. From the outside, one can easily mistake Café Kleinhaus to be just another pizzeria, and while they do offer some amazing pizzas, I think they don’t give themselves enough credit for their authentic menu.

They also offer delivery with Lieferando if you would like to take the opportunity to order at home – though I think the ambiance of the restaurant makes the experience.

What’s on the menu?

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and kaffee und kuchen, of course. They offer a variety of Turkish specialties as well as some classic international favourites.

Breakfast

If you’re going for breakfast at Café Kleinhaus, you can expect a variety of options including vegan, vegetarian, American dishes, British dishes, and of course, a variety of Anatolian foods. My favourite (Canadian as I am) is definitely their American-style pancakes. Why? Because even the most popular breakfast joints that serve up pancakes don’t make them the way we do in North America. Café Kleinhaus comes darn close!

We also feature Café Kleinhaus in our post 25+ Awesome Breakfast Joints in Düsseldorf if you’d like to check it out.

Kaffee und Kuchen

They also serve up some amazing warm chocolate lava cake and other delicious homemade cakes. For coffee and tea, you have a great selection to choose from including my favourites, homemade iced tea with pomegranate, or their delicious frappé.

Lunch + Dinner

Lunch and dinner at Café Kleinhaus are just as good as breakfast. You have plenty of options including homemade börek, vegetarian lasagna, köfte, Anatolian pasta, and my favourite… Manti (homemade tortellini-like noodles filled with minced turkey and topped with a warm tomato sauce and yogurt, served with a side salad.

The icing on the cake… they’re child friendly!

We didn’t realize this until we gave birth to our son. The decor of the restaurant is beautiful, classy, and delicate. From a first glance one would think children might not be welcome (as is the case in many restaurants around the city). However, hidden amidst the beautiful decor you’ll find a box of kid’s toys, high chairs available for use, and the staff will make sure you have a wonderful experience regardless of whether or not your child is throwing one of the world’s worst temper tantrums (as was our case this morning).

We don’t have any personal relationship with the staff, and yet they still went above and beyond to make him his own personal pan pizza to lift his little spirits.

Moral of the post? Help support a small local restaurant and give them a try! They are such a wonderful family-run business filled with positive energy and passion to build Café Kleinhaus into something wonderful for all of our families. Let’s show them some love!
