There are many different types of crazy insurance in Germany… but do we REALLY need home contents insurance?

Well… there really is no place like home! This also means yes, home contents insurance may actually come in quite helpful, but there are a few things we should probably talk about first.

What actually is home contents insurance?

Unlike health insurance in Germany, home contents insurance is not obligatory in Germany to have. However, it is still sometimes crucial to get. Imagine your home has been turned upside down: Almost everything is flying out like your furniture, clothes, or electronics. That’s what Home contents insurance is there for! Home contents insurance providers like Getsafe will often cover all things mentioned above in case e.g. of a fire or storm.

This way you don’t need to worry about what happens if…

So, what exactly does home contents insurance cover?

There are a number of obvious things that home contents insurance will cover you for. Like…

In case of a fire

Scenario 1: A fire at your home damages your clothes, furniture, and/or electronics. Let’s hope this never happens to you… but in case it does: insurance providers have your back and can cover financial loss up to the sum insured.

In case of a flood or water damage

Scenario 2: A defect in your washing machine causes tap water to leak out and damage furniture nearby (this happened to me while I wasn’t insured… lesson learned). Insurance will protect you from the financial consequences.

Storm & Hail

Scenario 3: During a storm, flying branches fly down and knock over your grandmother’s favorite flower pot she gave to you that was sitting on the ledge of your balcony. Yes, this happened to me too. ?

Burglary & Theft

Scenario 4: Burglars enter your home and steal jewelry, your laptop, and your TV. Home contents will ensure this as well. But what’s even more plausible is that you throw a party and someone you didn’t know steals your home contents. Insurance companies will often cover this too.

NOTE: Sadly, this is not all that uncommon in Germany. I’m not saying you need to worry, but if you’re living in a city or you’re located on the ground floor of an apartment or house… home contents insurance is definitely highly reccommended.

Which home contents insurance provider is worth checking out here in Germany?

I would personally recommend Getsafe – and not just because they’re affiliates of mine – but because they’re some of the country’s most mobile insurance providers, not just for home contents, but liability insurance (a must-have!), bike theft (add-on to liability with Getsafe), and dog liability insurance. And BONUS, they’re both in English (so is Feather, another great and affordable option for all different types of insurance).

They all run via a web app, and when something happens and you need to go through insurance, there’s no hefty paperwork involved… it’s as quick and simple as opening your web browser, sending them over a quick message and photo perhaps, and letting them get to work on making sure you’re good to go.

🥳 Also, for a limited time, Getsafe is offering all Life in Düsseldorf readers a 15 Euros bonus towards their content and/or liability insurance using this code: LIFEINGERMANY15
