Schloss Kalkum is just one of the beautiful castles located in Düsseldorf. It is a gorgeous classical and moated castle in the neighborhood of Kalkum, Düsseldorf. It stands under monumental protection so that we have the opportunity to visit and enjoy the beauty of the castle and the grounds.

Once upon a time, the castle belonged to the Lords of Winkelhausen, knights of the Kalkum region. After WWII, the castle was used as a refuge and then as a training center for homeworkers. In 1966 the castle opened up as an archive run by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). During this time, it was also used to house the Institute for the History of Pharmacy and the Vester’s Archive (Helmut Vester was a well-known pharmacist).

In January 2019, the state of NRW sold Kalkum Castle to an investor who is in the midst of developing the castle into an academy for music and art. Architect, David Chipperfield, is in charge of developing the new drawings for the academy.

Since August 2018, there have been renovations on the facade, which means at the moment that I had visited, the front of the castle looks a little like this (photo below).

However, the castle grounds are now re-opened and renovations are pretty well completed.

Although the castle was sold to a new investor, the 19 hectares of castle park will still remain open to the public. Throughout the park, you will find beautiful nature, a small pond, a stream running through the trees, a large orangery built on the eastern perimeter of the castle, and garden pavilion next to the east side of the wall.

It’s a beautiful place to visit in the spring when the flowers are blossoming, and the summer when the grass is lush and green!
