Not many of the castles in Düsseldorf allow visitors to enter, but strolling around the outside of one (or all) of Düsseldorfs castles is a great way to get some fresh air and keep busy.

Roam through the old town of Kaiserswerth

While the old town of Kaiserswerth is often frequently visited by locals and visitors alike, Sundays can be quite calm. Don’t forget to check out the beautiful sites of Kaiserswerth including the Kaiserpfalz ruins.

Embrace the great outdoors at Unterbachersee

There are so many things you can do at Unterbachersee during all seasons of the year. You’ll find 11 different ways to keep busy at Unterbachersee, here. A couple of my favorites include walking the entire circumference of Unterbachersee (and Elbsee if you want a challenge) and sitting by the lake watching the birds and fish pass by.

Watch the boats pass by at the Rheinpark in Golzheim

If you’re looking for a place to relax and perhaps drink a couple of beers, the Rheinpark Golzheim is a large open green space located directly along the Rhine River which also makes it a great place for boat watching.

Test out your golf skills at the golfing range

You can bring along your own set of clubs or you can rent some there! You will then insert money into a vending machine which will pop out a bucket of balls for you!

Visit the site where the oldest Neanderthal was found

The Neanderthal Museum is an indoor and outdoor experience great for the young and old, but the location where the oldest Neanderthal was found is actually on an outdoor walking path in the woods. Why not go on a little hike?

Visit one of the many lakes around Düsseldorf

I can’t recommend that you visit all the many lakes around Düsseldorf in the summer, because a number of the lakes around Düsseldorf are not swimmable. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t beautiful places to enjoy some peace in the great outdoors. Here are just a few worth visiting:

  • Elbsee
  • Grüner See
  • Silbersee
  • Lichtenbroicher Baggersee
  • Angermunder See
  • Lambertus-See
  • Fliedner-See
  • Suitbertus-See
  • Deichsee

Drive around and find all the Saülenheiligen statues around Düsseldorf

The Saülenheiligen statues are super cool works of art hidden around the city, and can be really fun to try and scout out as not all of them are easy to find!

Fly a kite along the Rheinwiesen

If it’s springtime while you read this, that means we’re getting a lot of windy days at the moment, making the Rheinwiesen the perfect place to fly a kite. You may even spot the Düsseldorf sheep while you’re there!

Talk a walk along the beach from Paradiesstrand to Hamm

You could technically spend an entire day walking along the river’s edge in Düsseldorf, but one of my favorite stretches is from Paradiesstrand to Hamm. Are you up for the challenge?

Get to know the roads of the Urdenbacher Kämpe

The Urdenbacher Kämpe is a large nature reserve filled with budding fruit trees and various types of terrain. It’s totally worth exploring on foot or by bike if you get the chance. You can also just head there to sit on a bench and watch the shipping boats pass by along the Rhein – a perfect Sunday activity!

Go for a hike in Grafenbergerwald or Aaperwald

There are so many awesome hiking routes in Grafenbergerwald and Aaperwald worth taking a journey on. Of course, there is always the option to visit the Wildpark which is an outdoor game reserve here in Düsseldorf.

Düsselauen bei Gödinghoven is located between Düsseldorf and Erkrath and is a picturesque nature reserve with plenty of lush green forests and trail paths for cyclers and hikers.

Stroll through the cemeteries

I know, it might sound a little strange to suggest you take a stroll around one of the many cemeteries here in Düsseldorf, but I’ve been to many and can honestly say that they are some of the most beautiful cemeteries I have ever been to. If this is something you are up for, I’d definitely recommend visiting Der Golzheimer Friedhof, Alter Bilker Friedhof, Südfriedhof, Nordfriedhof, and Waldfriedhof.
