I cannot live without Indian food! Anyone else?

Before coming to Germany, I wasn’t sure if Indian grocery stores in Düsseldorf even existed so I had packed kilos of spices and the immigration officers at the airport asked me if Im going to sell them! ?

But thankfully, after getting to know the city, I realized that there is so much diversity and there are many Asian (specifically Indian) grocery stores in the city. I no longer had to solely rely on Indian restaurants on Lieferando when I wanted a home-cooked style Indian meal.

Now, every time someone coming from India asks me about what they need to bring from India to survive here in Düsseldorf, I say NOTHING but yourselves!”

Indian Grocery Stores in Düsseldorf

For those like me, who are from India, and want to know more about whats available, or for those who simply enjoy Indian food and want to try cooking at home…

Here’s a list of Indian grocery stores in Düsseldorf ⬇️

Big Bazar

True to the name, this is a big bazar! This is the first store I visited when I was new in the city and I cannot tell you the joy I felt inside seeing isles of spices and masalas and a variety of flours and rice. This is probably the biggest Indian grocery store in Düsseldorf. They even have plenty of vegetables that are not easily available in German supermarkets. Big bazar also sells Indian pressure cookers, heavy-duty mixer grinders, Idli stand, and so on.

Location: Kölner Str. 26, 40211 Düsseldorf (likely relocating to Stresemannstraße in September 2022)

Transfood

Transfood has 2 locations, one near Hauptbahnhof and another along the same street as Big bazar, which is a new branch and quite big. They have a wide range of vegetables and leafy greens imported from India. Also, my favourite snacks from the south of India at very affordable prices. The best part is Transfood offers home delivery and charges only 5€.

Location: Kölner Str. 48, 40211 Düsseldorf & Ackerstraße, 40233 Düsseldorf

Kashmir store

Kashmir is a small Indian store located very close to the main railway station. Even though the store is quite small, they have pretty much everything available including homemade sweet dishes, especially during festivals like Diwali and Holi.

Available on Facebook

Location: Bismarckstraße 77, 40210 Düsseldorf

Indo-Ceylon House

Indo-Ceylon offers many South Indian products and spices imported from Sri Lanka. Recently renovated and with lots of new products, this is my go-to store for festive shopping as they sell fresh betel leaves and banana leaves.

Available on Facebook

Location: Worringer Pl. 5, 40210 Düsseldorf

Punjab & Bangla Bazaar

The Bangla store is famous for its excellent stock of Bangladeshi and Indian fish along with a wide range of meat. They are also well stocked with spices, masalas, and snacks from Bangladesh.

Available on Facebook

Location: Karlstraße 133, 40210 Düsseldorf

Nowadays, alternatives for almost everything are always available in supermarkets like Rewe or Kaufland. But if you want to have the taste of authentic Indian food then this is your go-to guide! Also, it’s worth noting that a lot of Indian spices and products are sometimes available in other international and Turkish stores near you

So, now that you have a list of Indian grocery stores to choose from, you dont have to worry anymore whether you have to carry a bag full of food products from India and get questioned at the airport like me!
